Peabody Wealth Advisors Employee Spotlight Blog- Mike Murray

In this month's Employee Spotlight Blog, we talked to Peabody Wealth Advisors President, Mike Murray. Let's find out a bit more about Mike and how he "Grabs life by the horns"!

How long have you worked at Peabody Wealth Advisors?

I co-founded Peabody Wealth Advisors in 2013. I have worked in the financial services industry since 2000 in various roles- legal and compliance and as a Financial Planner since 2007.

What led you to this career?

I wouldn’t describe myself as the ideal student growing up- I was more focused on the social aspects of school. One subject that I loved was history because it was a chance to learn about human nature over thousands of years. One semester, as part of an honors history class, we had a focus on investing and creating and tracking our own portfolios. I quickly discovered that I had a passion for investing and began reading the Wall Street Journal at age 13. It led me to college and obtain a degree in Business Administration with Concentrations in Finance and Management.

What do you love most about your job?

There are two elements that drive me - problem-solving and the desire to help others. Being a financial planner allows me to understand what is important in my client’s lives, create a strategy and help them execute a plan to help them achieve their goals in life.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

My wife and I love to travel, especially in the United States. This country is so beautiful and there is so much to see. Whether it’s having a grouper sandwich at a fish shack on the Gulf Coast of Florida, a glass of Pinot Noir in Sonoma, California, watching live music and having BBQ in Austin, Texas or driving to Treehouse Brewing for an IPA and something delicious off a food truck- it’s all about life experiences with family and friends.

What is on your bucket list?

Spending a month or more in Australia and New Zealand. There is so much to experience there- nature, food and culture. It is somewhere that I have wanted to go for a long time.

What is the best advice that you have ever been given?

“Don’t take yourself too seriously”. Life is way too short to worry about how others perceive us. Work hard and serve your family and your clients the best you can while having some laughs while you’re doing it. Our world that has become so polarized, many people are angry about things that they have no control over. As the saying goes "Laughter is the best medicine".

What is your favorite movie or tv show?

My favorite TV Show was The Wire on HBO. It was gritty, but most importantly, it was genuine in representing life in America society, not just the glamourous parts portrayed in popular culture and on social media. Omar was my favorite character by far- very complicated, not all good, but created a code to live by and stuck with it.

What is something about you that people may be surprised about?

I am a student and fan of old-school Hip-Hop and Rap music. I grew up 10 miles from New York City and it was a big part of the culture and was the music that defined most of my high school and college years.

What are your favorite sports teams?

You can take the guy out of Jersey, but can’t take Jersey out of the guy. Giants, Devils, Nets, and Mets.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I am double jointed in both of my thumbs. It makes for good entertainment and as a party trick.
